Diving into Story - monthly writing workshops
Next on Sunday 16th June, 1:30-4:30pm (£25) - “Memory and Invention”
This is the thirteenth ‘Diving into Story’ workshop run by Sandra, and she’s continuing with themed events, although whatever your particular writing interest you will be sure to have a chance to explore it.
The workshop on June 16th will explore what it means to write stories using your own experiences as inspiration. Are these stories memoir? Are they fiction? Are they both? And what about 'auto-fiction'? In fact do you need to know the genre when you start writing?
Sandra will use a variety of craft exercises and approaches to encourage your “instrument”, regardless of whether you want to write memoir or fiction.
No writing experience necessary and new participants always welcome, although numbers are limited to ensure individual attention.
What to bring: There will be tea and biscuits provided during a break, and please bring pen(s) and paper or a notebook. Please also bring a few sheets of plain A4 and something to press on.
For bookings and enquiries, please contact Sandra on firstname.lastname@example.org or join the group on Meetup: https://www.meetup.com/Diving-into-Story
If you are unsure whether these workshops are for you, a ‘taster’ price can be arranged so you can find out.
Sandra’s experience: Sandra has coached writers and led writing retreats in Ireland, Greece, Germany, the Netherlands and the U.S.A. She taught creative writing at The Galle Literary Festival, Sri Lanka and for the British Council in Colombo. Her own work is widely published in a variety of literary magazines and has won a number of awards. You can find out more here: http://www.sandrajensen.net
“You are lucky to be one of those people who wishes to build sand castles with words, who is willing to create a place where your imagination can wander. We build this place with the sand of memories; these castles are our memories and inventiveness made tangible. So part of us believes that when the tide starts coming in, we won't really have lost anything, because actually only a symbol of it was there in the sand. Another part of us thinks we'll figure out a way to divert the ocean. This is what separates artists from ordinary people: the belief, deep in our hearts, that if we build our castles well enough, somehow the ocean won't wash them away. I think this is a wonderful kind of person to be.”
