Mindfulness and Compassion: Graduate Course

Mindfulness is now recognised by doctors and psychologists as a powerful tool for enhancing wellbeing and reducing everyday life stress, as well as anxiety and depression.  It can also can help us to appreciate life more, improve our relationships and be more effective with tasks and activities.

What is Mindfulness and how can it help?

Mindfulness involves a particular way of giving our attention to our present-moment experience, which anyone can practice.  Mindfulness can help reduce worrying and fretting, or churning over’ problems in a way that makes us mentally go round in circles, or get upset time and again by the same triggers. It can also increase our enjoyment of life and our appreciation of the things that matter most to us.

Learn mindfulness in Hove (open to all)

At the Tree of Life Centre, we run the internationally recognised 'gold standard' 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course. MBSR was originally developed by John Kabat-Zinn to help people manage the stress of extreme health conditions, but it’s now used very widely to help anyone reduce everyday life stress and anxiety and live life more fully.  The course is taught by Annie Akasati McAuley or Dr Carolyn Drake.

Mindfulness and Compassion 4-week 'Graduate' Courses

For people who have completed an MBSR/MBCT mindfulness course

A chance to 'refresh' and take mindfulness practice further and explore the heart-opening qualities of compassion, in a supportive group.

Participant comment: "A good mix: reminder of items from the 8-week course, leading into the new kindness + compassionate practices. The most valuable part was looking inwards to be compassionate with myself, then outwards to others."

Annie Akasati McAuley

Mindfulness practice has been the source of much creativity and joy throughout my adult life. I completed ordination training in Buddhist philosophy and practice in 1999 and since then have regularly lead meditation courses and retreats within a Buddhist context.

I have now taught over 30 secular mindfulness courses. As well as Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR), I am also trained to teach Mindfulness-based Compassionate Living (MBCL).

Dr Carolyn Drake

My approach to teaching mindfulness is underpinned by a committed personal practice of mindfulness and meditation. I have a scientific background in Cognitive Psychology, Education and Neuropsychology, with a particular interest in brain development and function. I also have practical experience in primary education.

Since 2003 I have explored mindfulness in its secular and Buddhist contexts and delight in the heart-opening qualities of awareness and positive emotion the practice brings.
