Have you been trying to conceive for six months or longer? Would you like to talk to a specialst about the best options available to support the fertility of you and your partner.
The Centre’s fertility team are highly experienced specialists who work together by providing acupuncture, cranial osteopathy, herbal medicine and nutritional support as part of an integrated and empathetic approach to meet the needs, choices and budget of each person.
Acupuncture is particularly beneficial when you are thinking of starting a family and want to prepare and be in the best possible health to conceive.
For couples who have been trying for a while, it can give them the support and extra help they need to increase their chances of conceiving naturally.
Treatment helps couples focus on their diet, lifestyle and work-life balance as well as helping to resolve any underlying emotional or physical imbalances that can affect fertility.
So for both men and women, acupuncture not only helps achieve a natural pregnancy by enhancing general health and wellbeing, it also treats specific medical problems that might reduce fertility.
Acupuncture is beneficial for:-
Amenorrhoea - lack of menses
dysmenorrhea - painful, heavy periods
Spotting, bleeding outside period time
polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
fibroids, cysts, polyps
hormonal imbalances eg: PMS, migraine, skin eruptions, emotional issues
sperm count - morphology, motility, antibodies
immune system issues
In research, acupuncture has been shown to regulate the menstrual cycle; lower raised levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), relieve symptoms of endometriosis; induce ovulation in women with polycystic ovaries (PCOS); improve the quality and motility of sperm and release endorphins that reduce stress and promote relaxation. 30% of all failures to conceive are often described as ‘unexplained.’ Chinese medicine can often identify and effectively treat these unexplained causes because it looks at the person as a whole and by balancing hormones, improving blood flow to the uterus and pelvic area, and it can often avoid the need to resort to more invasive medical intervention.
If you have been advised that you need IUI/IVF it is definitely worth having a consultation to discuss your fertility issues, as there is much that acupuncture can do to correct issues without recourse to assisted reproductive techniques (ART) . If however, you are already going down the ART route, acupuncture can support you through the various processes. Pre IUI, acupuncture helps relax the body, making the procedure more comfortable. During IVF, acupuncture can assist during both down and up regulation, (ovarian stimulation). Research published in the BMJ has shown that acupuncture carried out on the day of ovarian transfer increases pregnancy rates by up to 65%.
Herbal Medicine has long been used in the treatment of fertility issues and can be extremely effective in helping to regulate hormonal imbalances which can, in turn, lead to conditions such as endometriosis; polycystic ovarian syndrome, menstrual disturbances; or fibroids. Herbs can also be used successfully to help with male factors that may lead to issues with conceiving such as low sperm count or low sperm motility. Importantly, one of the areas that herbal medicine can be most successful, is in addressing unexplained fertility, whereby there is no medical diagnosis or explanation for fertility issues experienced by a couple.
Herbs act to support the whole body and Sara will work with you to improve your general health as first step to conceiving. Pre-conception optimization is an essential part of any natural fertility plan, ensuring both mother and father are in optimum health at the time of conception. This is the essential basis of a baby’s future health. Some herbs also work to nourish the reproductive system more specifically, enabling it to work more effectively and therefore improve fertility outcomes for both males and females. Herbs can have powerful effects on the body’s hormonal balance and it is important to follow a natural fertility program using herbs under the guidance of a professionally qualified medical herbalist like Sara.
Balanced and nutrient rich diets are also key factors in a couple’s fertility journey and Sara can advise on this, integrating her knowledge of ‘food as medicine’ detoxification, therapeutic diets and herbal medicine. Sara is retreat manger and consultant at Platinum healing yoga and detox retreats and she utilizes this integrated health knowledge and experience to support her patients seeking fertility outcomes.
During the consultation, Sara will take a full case history, investigating symptoms that may be factors which are impacting a couple’s fertility. Factors may range from nutritional deficiencies, the physical effects of long term stress, chronic illness, hormonal imbalance and environmental toxins. She is able to recommend and interpret biochemical or functional tests that may be necessary to evaluate hormonal balance, adrenal issues, nutritional imbalances and food sensitivities and allergies which may be affecting a couple’s fertility. She will then prescribe a course of herbal medicine, alongside nutritional and lifestyle advice in a personalized treatment plan.
Sara in a firm believer in addressing the whole picture of a person’s health and assisting patients to make important lifestyle and nutrition changes that will increase their fertility as well as positivity affecting their health in the long term. She has an empathetic approach that works with the couple to ensure a positive and effective therapeutic relationship. Herbal medicine can work extremely well alongside acupuncture and osteopathic treatments, treating a couple holistically, and addressing fertility issues using an integrated approach.
Sara specializes in women’s health, hormonal conditions, adrenal health and natural fertility. She recently published an article in the internationally acclaimed Journal of Herbal Medicine published by Elsevier, on Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and Herbal medicine. She has attended specialist seminars on fertility and herbal medicine and is currently training in postgraduate level functional medicine. She believe it is important to keep up to date with the most recent research and incorporates this into her practice. She qualified with a BSc (Hons) in Herbal Medicine and is a member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists.
