Charlie is a highly skilled and experienced practitioner offering acupuncture and tuina (pronounced twee-na) which is Chinese Medical Massage.
She studied acupuncture at the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine in Reading and has spent her whole adult life studying and practicing Chinese energetic and healing systems, including qi gong, nei gong, tai chi, acupuncture and tuina. Charlie holds a degree and licentiate in Acupuncture and a post-graduate diploma in tuina.
In 2007, she launched ACMAC (www.acmac.net), to gather information about multi-bed practice, list all the UK multi-bed clinics, and to offer support and encouragement to help new clinics get started. She is a leading member of the low-cost multi-bed acupuncture clinic that runs at the centre on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays each week.
Tuina - Chinese Medical Massage
Tuina originated around 3000 years ago in China. It utilizes a wide range of techniques, fast and slow, soft and more penetrating, physical and energetic, that will be chosen depending on your individual needs.
During a tuina massage, the patient remains fully clothed and is usually treated on a couch. Only occasionally a little oil may be used.
Tuina is remedial massage: this means that it can be used to treat painful conditions such as back, neck, shoulder and knee pain, as well as many other conditions. It can also be extremely relaxing and therefore used to calm stress and raise low mood.
Tuina is based on the same theory as acupuncture. A network of meridians exists within the body, and massage (like acupuncture) aims to restore a healthy flow of energy in these meridians, leading to a feeling of health, happiness and vitality.
For this reason tuina can be very effectively used in the same treatment as acupuncture. For example, lower back pain can be treated using acupuncture needles in the hands and feet. As there are no needles in the back, that area is free to be massaged to maximize the effectiveness of the treatment.
What happens during a treatment session?
During your first appointment, I will take a full case history to determine your current state of health, what complaints need addressing, any relevant medical history, medications, and so on.
I will then explain what I plan to do and make sure you’re happy for me to proceed. I will help you get comfortable on the treatment couch and cover you with a sheet, through which the massage will take place. I’ll explain to you what I’m doing as the massage takes place and invite feedback as to how the pressure of the strokes feels to you. At any time you can ask for more or less pressure, or ask any questions.
If you are also having acupuncture, I’ll similarly explain to you what I plan to do and why at all stages of the treatment and make sure you’re happy.
After the treatment I will ensure that you feel well and advise on any relevant after-care. I might offer some diet, exercise or lifestyle advice. I’ll suggest the optimum time for your next treatment.
I am happy to offer a free 15 minute telephone consultation to talk about your health and conditions. Please contact the clinic reception to organize this.

Acupuncture; Tuina massage
No need to book: just drop in!
"I started Acupuncture & Tuina massage due to my menopausal symptoms, alongside managing my osteoarthritis of the hips, back, neck pain & hiatal hernia.
I had visited the Tree of life clinic in Hove for alternative therapies in the past & had always enjoyed my visits to this friendly, calm & quite peaceful environment especially the great zen garden situated at the rear.
Once I had decided to try acupuncture this was the place I felt confident in researching for a practitioner.
Charlie not only listens to my summary of what has happened to me during each week, she is also supportive on every level – physical, mental and emotional. She has always made me feel at ease and is extremely easy to talk to, I find sessions with Charlie extremely therapeutic & also appreciate her being humorous, professional & always considerate.
Not only do I look forward to my visits for treatments, I look forward to her company as well.
She checks energy pulses, tongue diagnosis & takes into consideration my overall state of health, & then the acupuncture & Tuina session begins. Charlie has tailored my treatments to meet my individual needs as well as my whole being, and all of my symptoms have improved greatly. It certainly is a holistic approach towards acupuncture & Tuina that Charlie provides.
After each treatment session my body tends to respond almost immediately. Sometimes I need to go home & rest for a few hours after a session & on occasion, symptoms can get worse before they get better – a notable effect of natural healing. That nights sleep is usually quite deep & the next day I generally feel completely rejuvenated.
I would happily recommend Charlie to my family and friends, you know you will always be in the safest hands" Tania Woodgate - Hove
